Golden Isles Penguin Project Informational Meeting Tuesday January 22 at the Ritz
BRUNSWICK, GA— The Golden Isles Penguin Project, a musical theatre production that casts children and young adults with disabilities in all roles, will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 22nd at 6:30 pm at the Historic Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick. Golden Isles Arts & Humanities, the sponsoring organization, is encouraging all potential Artists (young people ages 10 to 25 with a disability), Mentors (young people ages 12 to 25) and their parents and anyone interested in volunteering to attend to learn how they can be a part of “Shrek, The Musical, JR.”
At the meeting, participants will get to meet the production team, learn a fun dance or two, and hear more about the upcoming show, rehearsal schedules and more. The Penguin Project is open to any individual age 10 to 25 with a physical or developmental disability. The Penguin Project also utilizes a “peer mentor” system, linking each young artist with an age level peer who does not have a disability. The peer-mentors work side-by-side with their partners, assisting them throughout the entire rehearsal process and on stage. They participate in the group production numbers, but are trained to remain “in the background” and provide direct assistance to their partner only as needed.
The Golden Isles Penguin Project was launched in 2017 and its first production, Annie, Jr., included 21 Artists and 22 Mentors who performed to sold out audiences. In June 2018, a total of 60 new and returning Artists and Mentors performed Disney’s Peter Pan JR, again to sell out crowds. Founded by Dr. Andrew Morgan, a developmental pediatrician in Peoria, Illinois, The Penguin Project strives to demonstrate that individuals with special needs are fully capable of participating in community activities with the same dedication and enthusiasm as others, if given opportunity and support.
